Quadrupole nature of tuning fork.
PIRA: Unknown
A tuning fork is held close to the ear and rotated about the axis of the handle. Condensations are propagated in opposite directions, while rarefactions are sent in opposite directions at 90 degrees to the condensations. On 45 degrees lines, the interference will give minima, so maxima and minima in intensity are heard as the fork is rotated.
