Loop the loop
PIRA: Unknown
A copper ball rolls down a track which is terminated in a vertical circular loop of radius R. The theoretical height of the track, 5/2 R, for the ball to complete the loop can be tested quite well. Work is done on the ball to raise it to a height on the inclined part of the track. This potential energy is converted to kinetic energy as the ball gets rolling. At the top of the loop, the centrifugal force acting on the ball balances the force of gravity.
