When a charged rod is brought near the top of an electroscope, the electric field near the rod will cause a redistribution of charge on the leaves of the electroscope, and they will spread. When a metallic wire cage is placed over the electroscope without touching its top and the rod again brought near, it will be seen that the leaves will not spread and that the scope is shielded from the electric field of the rod by the wire cage.
