Electric field lines.
PIRA: Unknown
A small conducting stand carrying paper strips is placed on a conducting sphere which is insulated from its surroundings. When the conducting sphere is charged by an electrostatic generator the paper becomes charged and stands erect with the strips repelling each other and being repelled by the conducting sphere. If a grounded metal point is placed in proximity of the conducting sphere, a corona discharge from the point occurs which neutralizes the charge on the conducting sphere. The paper strips then collapse.
